Queensland Gun Safe Changes 2027: What Bundaberg Firearm Owners Need to Know
The Queensland Police Service has announced that storage requirements for many firearms are changing. If you own a rifle, shotgun or other firearm, now is the time to check your safe, because the new rules apply from 12 March 2027.
This article is a general summary of information published by QPS. It is not legal advice. Check police.qld.gov.au for the current requirements for your firearm category.
What is changing?
From 12 March 2027, storage containers for Category A, B, C, E and M weapons must:
- be made of solid steel, and
- be securely fixed to the frame or floor of the building if they weigh less than 150kg.
Solid timber containers, safes and cabinets will no longer be permitted for these categories. If you currently use a timber cabinet, you will need to upgrade before the deadline.
What stays the same?
QPS says all the other storage requirements under the Weapons Regulation 2016 remain the same, including:
- Containers must have a sturdy combination lock, keyed lock or keyed padlock.
- Containers must be kept locked, other than for the time needed to insert or remove a weapon.
- Firearms must be stored unloaded, with the bolt removed or the action broken.
- Ammunition must be stored separately from the firearms.
You are also responsible for taking all reasonable precautions to make sure firearms are stored safely, are not lost or stolen, and do not come into the hands of an unauthorised person.
What happens if I don’t comply?
QPS warns that failing to meet the safe storage requirements can result in fines of up to $16,000 or two years’ imprisonment under section 60 of the Weapons Act 1990. Beyond the penalties, a secure safe is one of the simplest ways to keep your family and community safe.
How to check your current safe
- Check the material. Is it solid steel, or timber?
- Check how it’s fixed. If it weighs less than 150kg, it needs to be securely fixed to the building’s frame or floor.
- Check the lock. It needs to be a sturdy combination lock, keyed lock or keyed padlock.
- Check your category. Rules differ for Category D, H and R firearms, so confirm the requirements for each firearm you own.
- Plan ahead. The deadline is 12 March 2027, and it’s easier to sort this out before the rush.
